Charlie opened his eyes and watched Margo march toward them. âYou stop right there,â she said, fixing the man with a glare. âYou want to knock heads with one of these guys over here, fine, but nobody beats up on any kids under my watch.â
The man, who stood a full head taller and was at least fifteen years younger than the stocky brunette, stepped back. âHeâs only an elf. Besides, he hit me first.â
âHeâs a kid and you started it. Now get back over there before I have your sorry ass hauled off by the guards.â
The man, grumbling under his breath, rejoined his friends. Margo turned to Charlie. âAre you okay?â
âFine,â Charlie said through gritted teeth. Once again, everybody was staring at him, some with a touch of fear. He pushed himself to his feet and dusted off his jeans. Without looking back, Charlie stalked off toward the tents. He wanted to lie down and be asleep before the other kids joined him and started in with the questions, or worse, the whispers.
Anger and shame fought for dominance as he walked. So what, he thought to himself, so what did he care what they thought, any of them? He wasnât one of them. Heâd be better off with his own kind. Only he didnât have a kind, did he? Not human, not elf, part of both but belonging to neither.
âCharlie?â
He kept walking. âGo away.â
âCharlie, wait a minute. Letâs talk.â
âI donât want to talk.â
Miranda caught up to him and grabbed hold of his arm. âStop, please. Talk to me.â
He shook her hand away. âDonât, all right? Itâs fine. Iâm used to it.â
âBut how did you...I mean that guy was so big, so how--?â
âI donât know, okay? I just donât know.â His shoulders sagged. âSomething came over me, thatâs all. I donât know what it was.â
âHas it happened before?â
âA couple of times,â he muttered. âI donât want to talk about it.â
âBut what is it?â
âI said I donât want to talk about it.â He whirled toward her, his hands curled into fists. This anger was of a more normal kind, not like the anger that came with that detached feeling. This was anger born mostly of shame and confusion. âJust drop it.â
âOkay,â she said, looking slightly hurt. âIâm sorry.â
Charlie sighed, unclenching his fists with effort. He wasnât angry at her. âNo, Iâm the one who should be sorry. That was...embarrassing.â
âWhy?â Miranda looked genuinely puzzled. âThat guy was the one acting like a jerk, not you. What do you have to be embarrassed about?â
âI...well because...â He frowned. âI donât know, but everyone was looking at me.â
âSo?â
Charlie made an exasperated sound. âSo...wouldnât you have been embarrassed?â
She grinned. âPeople were staring at me too. Do I look embarrassed?â
âWell...no. But youâre...youâre ...â
âWeird?â
âYeah, maybe, a little. I donât know.â Charlie ran a hand through his hair. âIâve had a bad day.â
âSo I noticed. Come on,â she reached out and took his hand, âletâs go back to the tent. I think youâll feel better after you sleep.â
Charlie felt better already, holding her hand as they walked under the stars to the tent.
